Environmental

Environmentally sustainable practices are good for our planet... makes good business sense too.

Moffatt Scrap Iron & Metal Inc. was founded on the principal that recycling is not only good for the environment but is good business. We divert these precious resources from landfills, and by ensuring they are recycled and reused we are doing our part for the environment. Let us help you do your part too.

Moffatt is firmly committed to environmentally responsible practices that meet quality control standards every step of the way. We strive to utilize the recyclable resources to the optimum level.

As part of our metal recycling process, Moffatt also operates a comprehensive material handling program to collect, separate, and properly dispose of hazardous and environmentally unsafe materials. This includes:

  • Residue Fluids:
Moffatt Scrap Iron & Metal Inc has a containment area where vehicles are processed. The fluids are contained in a basin where they are then removed by a fully licensed firm, then separated and recycled.
  • Used Tires:
All tires are removed from vehicles and equipment prior to processing and disposed of in an environmentally responsible process.
  • Batteries:
Batteries are removed prior to vehicle processing, contained in a custom sealed container. The batteries are then transferred to a licensed recycling facility by our TDG certified drivers.
  • Freon:
Moffatt Scrap Iron & Metal Inc. has employees trained in Ozone Depletion, fully licensed and equipped to remove Freon gas.
  • Mercury Switches:
Moffatt Scrap Iron & Metal Inc. is a registered participant in the Switch Out Program. This is a national program designed to remove, collect and manage mercury-containing switches in end-of-life vehicles before they are flattened, shredded and recycled into new steel.

“One pound of Freon released into the environment can destroy 70,000 pounds of Ozone.”

The use of scrap steel, as opposed to virgin ore, has the following estimated positive environmental impacts:

  • Air pollution is reduced by 86%
  • Water pollution is reduced by 76%
  • Water consumption is reduced by 40%
  • Mining wastes are reduced by 97%
  • Consumer waste is reduced by 98%

Steel is the only industry that recycles itself—even its own production equipment will eventually be recycled. Fact.
